The Course

The AMI course for the developmental age of 3 to 6 years, also known as the kindergarten course, is led and conducted by Ms. Maria Roth as the AMI trainer.

For several years she was the director of the integrative Montessori kindergarten of Professor Theodor Hellbrügge’s “Aktion Sonnenschein e.V.”. Between 1976 and 1998, as the only AMI Trainer in Germany for the ages of 3 – 6 years, she led the international courses in Montessori curative pedagogy under the overall direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. hc. Theodor Hellbrügge. She is the only AMI Trainer in Germany for the ages of 3 – 6 years. Between 1976 and 1998, she led the international courses in Montessori curative pedagogy under the overall direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. hc. Theodor Hellbrügge These courses included the Montessori pedagogy for non-disabled children and its application for children with various and multiple disabilities. Since 1999 Mrs. Roth has been teaching the AMI Primary Course for non-disabled children aged 3-6 years under MIA. since 2018 under MAE.

Her other functions include her work as an AMI examiner in various countries.

Target Group

  • Those interested in working with children aged 3 to 6 years and seeking a professional education and continued training in the educational an curative pedagogy sector.
  • Those interested in pedagogical, psychological, therapeutic or medical training.
  • Those interested in studying Montessori pedagogy.

Course Language

The course is taught in German and English.

The course will be simultaneously translated into Chinese and Russian.


The final examination is divided into a written and an oral final examination.
The examining board is chaired by the examiner, who is appointed by AMI. The remaining examiners and exam assistants are appointed by the course instructor in consultation with AMI.

Certification Requirements

  • Minimum of 90% course attendance
  • Successful completion of written submissions: theory, material books, practical report
  • Proof of completion for required hours of material work practice, observation and internship
  • Exemplary self-made material

AMI diploma course completion

After passing the written and oral examinations, as well as fulfilling the other AMI requirements, the student will receive an AMI diploma for the ages of 3 – 6 years.

The diploma awarded by AMI confirms that the holder “has studied the principles and practical application of Montessori education for the concerned age group and has passed the written and oral examinations.” This diploma entitles the holder to run a Montessori kindergarten group according to the principles of Maria Montessori worldwide. Note, however, that various national/state requirements may also apply. In addition, AMI is entitled to supplement its state professional title with: “AMI Diploma holder” (with AMI diploma).

The diploma entitles the holder to participate in all international AMI events and its affiliated organizations in Germany and abroad. This course forms the basis for the AMI Teacher Course and the planned AMI Montessori Course for Special Needs Education and Therapy. This diploma does not authorize the holder in the training of others in Montessori education.
